Understanding Fireworks and their Product Descriptions

What is it that we love so much about fireworks? Or rather, what does a New Orleans pyrotechnic display add to an event? For most of us, we would probably say something about the loud noises and the brilliant visuals. Both of these things, however, can be pretty hard to understand just by reading product descriptions that are often filled with fireworks-ese jargon.

To help you visualize what your firework or your New Orleans pyrotechnic display will look (and sound) like, here’s some helpful information about firework types and effects.

Common Firework Types

A fireworks type is defined by where the effect takes place. The primary two types are aerial and ground-based, but there are also several fireworks in a class of their own. Here are some short definitions and examples of the three main firework types:

  • Aerial Fireworks: These fireworks are launched into the air and explode, displaying their effects high in the sky. There are many different types of aerial fireworks. One popular option is firework cakes, a bundle of roman candles and/or aerial shells that are fused together and explode in a chain reaction.

  • Ground-based Fireworks: These fireworks are lit on the ground and do not reach as high as aerial fireworks. Ground-based fireworks are much better suited for small spaces. Fountains are a popular type of ground-based fireworks that get their name from the shower of sparks they release when lit.

  • Novelty Fireworks: Novelty fireworks are all the other miscellaneous fireworks that do not strictly fall into the aerial or ground-based category. Sparklers are one example of this type. Sparklers are small and slow-burning fireworks that produces sparks and other effects
